Barrie is the owner of ABCD Books. Active in variety of local organizations, she is currently secretary for the Maine Antiquarian Booksellers Association (MABA). As an avid cook, she delights in advising on cookbooks. Any suggestions - or, God forbid, complaints - about ABCD Books should be directed to her.
M--, our shy manager, has worked at the store the longest of all the staff and is the most familiar with the ABCD collection. She is passionate about both her garden and her menagerie, and she collects illustrated children's books.
Jennifer came to us from the Owl & Turtle, where she was manager. She heads up our Special Orders department and is a whiz at finding the most obscure out-of-print books.
A New Jersey native, Becky spent the last 40 years in and around Washington, D.C., where she earned a degree in journalism, married one of her teachers, raised a family, and worked for television and radio stations. And always, she read and haunted used bookstores. She says, "To be paid for surrounding myself with used and rare books is almost beyond belief!"
Ginny designs our website and helps us minimize computer glitches. She shares a studio with her husband, artist Hugh Gumpel, where they've worked on a variety of design projects, including books and other publications, posters and murals. They have a small, eclectic collection of art books and catalogues.
Anne has three cats and works in the film industry. She enjoys reading and watching cricket. The cats enjoy vomiting and clawing the furniture.
When not working for us, Lisa is a high school English teacher. In her spare time she bicycles and makes braided rugs. She is also teaching herself ancient Greek so she can read the Iliad, her favorite book, in its original language.
Ed, the unofficial mayor of Camden , knows all the local news before anyone else. He also pet-sits for some of the area's finest companion animals. You can find him on Sunday mornings singing in the choir at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Thanks to Ed, we can now say we have a multilingual staff - Ed is a former German teacher.
The shop's senior cat, Hodgie Burr, won the blue ribbon in the Yellow-and-White class at the last Midcoast Charity Cat Show. He is a handsome Maine coon cat with extraordinarily large white tufted paws and very long and elegant whiskers. He has a resonant purr and a very friendly nature. Hodgie has excellent table manners and joins us at the table for lunch daily.
Marco is the shop's newest addition. He is gray, young and frisky. A bit skittish with the staff, he sidles up to those customers with deep voices and slow movements. He enjoys sitting in the window and watching birds perched on the neighboring roofs and telephone wires. He does not yet join us for lunch.
